Why Your Water Heater May Fail

Internal Oxidation of your Water Heater

Hulsey PLumbing Septic and Drain repairs and installs water heaters, including gas, electric, solar and tankless.Sacrificial anode rods are installed in water heaters to prevent oxidation of the water heater tank from the inside out. If they are not periodically replaced, oxidation will attack your water heater tank and eventually cause a leak.

Often water softeners increase the speed of anode consumption. Normally if you have a 6 year warranty heater, which is not supplied by softened water, you can wait until the 5th or 6th year to check and/or replace the anode rod.

Homeowners with water softeners should, at a minimum, check the anode rod in their water heater once every two years. Hulsey Plumbing can help!

Powered anodes are an option for water heaters with softened water. They are a permanent replacement to the sacrificial anode rod and do not need to be replaced. However, powered anodes are not offered as an option by the manufacturers of residential water heaters and must be installed as an after-market item which significantly increases the cost.

Hulsey Plumbing will repair or replace you rrusted water heater. External Oxidation in Water Heaters

The exterior surface of water heater tanks does not have the protective coating that the interior of the tank has. Water leaks from valves and fittings outside the tank can cause exterior rust and eventually cause the tank to fail. Rust or oxidation of the water heater jacket will not cause the tank to fail but should be evaluated to find its cause.

Sediment Buildup in Water Heaters

The sediment that builds up on the bottom of the water heater is basically calcium carbonate which is created when hard water is heated. In addition to the calcium carbonate, suspended solids in the incoming water can precipitate to the bottom of the water heater tank.

The sediment buildup insulates the bottom of the tank from the protection of the anode rod, can cause the lower element failure in electric heaters, and can cause the bottom of the tank to overheat and damage the protective lining in gas water heaters.

If the water heater has an aluminum anode rod, the aluminum precipitate can accumulate in high concentrations in the bottom and cause health concerns. Call Hulsey Plumbing today for assistance with water heater service & repair.

Improper Size of Your Water Heater

If the installed water heater is too small for the application, it is subject to elevated instances of expansion and contraction and, therefore, its life expectancy is reduced. Let a professional Hulsey plumber give you an evaluation of your water heater before replacement. Our service may save you money on your decision.

Water Pressure Too High leading to Your Water Heater

Pressures over 80 psi can damage water heater tanks, piping, and appliances. While the street pressure may be below 80 psi, water systems that are protected by back-flow devices close the system and thermal expansion can sometimes cause the pressure to exceed 125 psi. Hulsey Plumbing has been installing water heaters for nearly 100 years. You can trust us to evaluate your plumbing before your new water heater replacement.
